I really don't know if I have any right to speak about this event whatsoever, because I myself...have never even seen Star Wars. However, the name of this event intrigued me and when I researched it more, it seemed to too cool to not blog about. Onward to Penguicon!

Penguicon 6.0 is the "Open Source Software and Science Fiction Convention." So what does that mean? Here's the explanation from Penguicon's offical site.

To those of you familiar with the Linux and Free/Open Source community

Think of a weekend long Linux Users Group meeting with hundreds of other geeks, which also just happens to have nationally acclaimed guests, a LAN party, its own wireless network, hotel room parties, lots of folks talking about Science Fiction and Fantasy, a place to buy cool t-shirts and buttons and such, amateur singing, anime, a costume contest, and free caffeine and snacks always available.

To those of you familiar with Science Fiction conventions

Imagine all the convention features you know and love, with the addition of wireless internet access, computer game tournaments, people who know about online publishing / books on demand / digital art, a programming track involving computing topics and another one focusing on the crossover between Science Fiction and computing. Imagine seeing your favorite creative visionaries meet the innovators who are creating the future

Now like I said, I've never even seen Star Wars, but the things that I have heard about sci-fi conventions are crazy. People go all out, dressing as their favorite characters, meeting up with fellow online fans and plenty of other stuff. What I like about Penguicon is that they have successfully taken the age old stereotype that "Tech geeks love sci-fi" and made it beyond acceptable; they've made it cool! Just take a look at some of their events:

Hotel Room Parties
A place to buy cool t-shirts and buttons
Anime Costume Contest
They even have a stress management session!
And did I mention liquid nitrogen ice cream?

Plus, how could you not want to go to Penguicon. Just look at their design for their 2008 promotional t-shirts

The event is being held April 18th - 20th in Troy Michigan. For more events, check out the Official Penguicon Site
