Making Changes But Sticking With Trade Show Giveaways

Much like a city's bid for holding the Olympics, trade show convention centers must sell themselves. Many trade shows can last up to a week which means great business for hotel, transportation and restaurant businesses in the area. That's why, after loosing their second trade show to cheaper locations, Chicago's convention center McCormick Place is looking to make some major changes.

Mayor Richard Daley said, "'This is a serious situation. It's a serious situation for hotels, retail, (the media), everything," he continued, "Because if the shows keep dwindling down, there will be less and less activity at McCormick Place, and that will have a deep effect on the state, county and city governments, the revenue."

Many exhibitors complained about the high costs which have led to many attendees dropping out of these shows. Another contributing factor to the decline of trade shows at McCormick Place is due to union worker rules. Because the trade shows take place in Chicago, there are limitations to the amount of work that actual exhibitors are allowed to do. This means that union workers must come in and be paid for extra work.

By looking into these problems, the city hopes that trade shows will once again call McCormick Place home. While cuts in expenses and paid workers may be made, rest assured that thousands of trade show giveaways will continue to fill the convention booths at trade shows for years to come.
